Questions
Straight answers.
Tax rules change. Where a question touches an HMRC rule, the answer points you to GOV.UK and we are happy to look at your own position.
How much does an accountant cost?
It depends on the work, the size of the business and how many transactions and payslips there are. We give you a custom quote based on your business and its financial situation, agreed with you before work starts.
What are management accounts and do I need them?
Management accounts are reports for you, rather than for HMRC. They usually show the profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow for the month, with commentary on where results differ from budget or from last year.
Most small businesses are not required by law to produce them, unlike statutory year-end accounts. Owners and boards use them to see how the business is performing and to make decisions during the year.
Can you catch up on bookkeeping that is behind?
Yes. Catch-up bookkeeping is part of what we take on: working through the bank statements and invoices, reconciling the accounts and bringing the records up to date. How long it takes depends on how far behind the records are, so tell us the period and the software when you enquire.
Do you work with charities?
Yes. Our lead accountant has worked with charities, including bookkeeping and reporting. Charities have their own reporting requirements, so tell us your size, funding and what you need when you enquire and we will confirm whether we are the right fit.
Can I switch accountant part-way through the year?
Yes. You sign one authority form. We send the professional clearance letter, collect the records and continue from where your old accountant left off.
Do I need to use Making Tax Digital?
Making Tax Digital for VAT applies to VAT registered businesses. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to self-employed people and landlords by qualifying income: over £50,000 from 6 April 2026, over £30,000 from 6 April 2027 and over £20,000 from 6 April 2028.
Whether it applies to you depends on your own figures. Check GOV.UK or ask us.
When do I need to register for VAT?
You must register if your taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000, or you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days. You can also register voluntarily below that. Income that is VAT exempt does not count towards taxable turnover.
When is my Self Assessment tax return due?
The tax year ends on 5 April. An online return, and payment of any tax owed, is due by midnight on 31 January after the end of that tax year. Check GOV.UK for the dates that apply to you.
Do I pay my tax in instalments?
Some people make two payments on account towards the next bill, each half of the tax owed last year, due by midnight on 31 January and 31 July. You do not have to if last year’s bill was under £1,000, or you paid more than 80% of it outside Self Assessment, for example through your tax code.
